Misconception About Getting a Custom Club Fitting

While there are certainly some adages in golf that cannot be argued (“Never up, never in,” for example), there are plenty of misconceptions surrounding the game.

And when it comes to golf club fitting, some assume it is a luxury reserved only for golfers who have perfected the fine art of the game. What most people don’t realize is that the mid-to-high handicap players are the ones who will benefit the most from getting custom fit for clubs.

Players assume that they have to have a finely-tuned swing before they can consider getting fit for golf clubs. Higher handicap golfers believe that their swing is not consistent enough to be able to gain benefit from a custom club fitting. This is not the case at all.

The truth is that the clubs in golfers’ bags are manufactured standard and for mass use and distribution. Stock, off-the-shelf clubs actually inhibit golfers from becoming more consistent.

A truism you can hang your hat on: The less skilled the golfer, the more they need to get custom fit in order to play to the best of their ability.

Low handicappers achieve better playing ability because they have trained their body kinetics to make a consistently similar swing that they learned from proper swing fundamentals.

But for those of us who can’t practice hours on end and play 18 holes a day, it’s tough for us to elevate our games. It’s difficult for us to feel we have any control over where the ball goes or how low of scores we can shoot.

But the one thing we can control is having the best possible tools in our bag to help play the best possible golf we can.

If a middle to high handicapper plays woods that are too long, club face angles that are not matched to their swing path, a swingweight that varies from their swing tempo or other parameters that don’t compliment their individual swing, golfers will actually experience more frustrations.

Do yourself a favor and come in to Cool Clubs for a custom club fit despite your playing ability. The sticks in your bag is the one part of your game you can have control over, so make sure you’ve got the best clubs in the bag that can help you “Play Better Golf!”

“Caddyshack” Always Celebrated at Phoenix Open

flickr user: jamiemyslicki

One of the most beloved golf movies of all time, “Caddyshack,” celebrated its 30th birthday yesterday.

Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield received accolades for their performance when it debuted on July 25, 1980. Their trio of talent and humor helped the movie gross $3.1 million its opening weekend and nearly $40 million on the year—quite the feat for a movie debuting in 1980!

While avid golfers far and wide can appreciate and agree upon the movie’s genius, it’s only those of us here in Scottsdale that get to turn our favorite “Caddyshack” moments into real-life experiences.

The movie has become a cult favorite. In fact, there’s an unspoken code among golfers that says you must be able to recite every line by memory before you are accepted into the gentleman’s club.

On more than one occasion, fans in the galleries at the TPC Scottsdale have been known to yell out “Caddyshack” references during the Phoenix Open. The fans attending TPC Scottsdale, home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, seem particularly smitten by the movie.

When DiMarco was standing over a putt at the raucous 16th hole in 2002, a fan recreated a scene in the movie by yelling out, “Noonan.” DiMarco made the putt anyway and went on to victory.

Scott Verplank also heard the “Noonan” distractions at 16. “There are probably not many movies where you have people recite lines from it at the Phoenix Open — where there are 15,000 people around the green — and someone is yelling ‘Noonan’ and everybody there knows what it means,” Verplank told the Tulsa World. “Any movie that has people talking about it 30 years later is obviously a hell of a movie.”

Indeed. TOUR pro Joe Durant told the New York Daily News that he travels with a “Caddyshack” DVD and watches it when he’s feeling down. “It’s a great pick-me-up,” Durant said.

Stuart Appleby told the Daily News that “Caddyshack” is simply “the greatest film of the 20th century.”

Fans of “Gone With The Wind” might argue otherwise, but the point is this: Golfers love “Caddyshack.” Now 30 years old, its popularity does not seem to be fading.

“Caddyshack,” Murray once said, “was a great thing.”

If you don’t think so, just ask any golfer.

Recycle Your Used Golf Balls THIS Weekend

Flickr User: Alex Seder

Think back to the last round of golf you played and try to recall the number of golf balls you lost. Be it one or one dozen, you probably didn’t play the same ball the entire 18 holes.

Considering that close to 500 million rounds of golf are played each year, it’s no wonder more than two billion golf balls are manufactured each year to keep golfers’ bags stocked full.

To give you an idea of just how many golf balls two billion is, picture this: if all the balls were lined up dimple to dimple, they would circle the earth’s equator…twice!

Whew! Talk about a lot of golf balls.

So what happens to the balls that we shank in the water, forfeit to looming reptiles or those that get caught in the billowing palm trees that line many of the most beautiful coastal courses we know?

Hopefully, they get recycled. At least that’s what Tempe-based golf company Dixon Golf wants to see happen.

And in order to help make that simple for you to do, Dixon Golf is holding recycling events at both Valley PGA Tour Superstore locations THIS WEEKEND. The first event will be held at the Scottsdale location and the second is to be held at their Chandler store.

Saturday, July 24          11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.              Loop 101 and Shea Blvd; Scottsdale

Sunday, July 25            11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.                Arizona Rd; Chandler

Dixon Golf will be accepting golf balls from all brands (aside from range balls, please).

Everyone who brings in golf balls to recycle will receive a gift certificate totaling $12 as well as merchandise giveaways. One lucky participant from each store will win a $250 PGA Tour Superstore gift card.

Dixon’s take on recycling used golf balls is simple. More than 300 million balls are lost or disposed of each year, most of which are made of harmful heavy metals, such as tungsten, lead, cobalt and zinc.

Dixon balls are not made of heavy metals, rather, they are created using recyclable proprietary polymer and thus, are less harmful to the environment.

The Dixon Golf balls collected this weekend will be recycled into a reusable material, utilized in the manufacturing of playground equipment and field turf. All other brands of golf balls will be used to research their recyclability and possible application after being turned into reusable form. PGA Tour Superstores and other retailers will regularly have small, countertop receptacles for collecting used golf balls.

Please come out THIS WEEKEND and bring your old golf balls in to get recycled. Dixon Golf and the environment sure would appreciate it!

Pick the Top Finisher in the Open Championship

The most highly coveted of all Majors ‘round the world returns to St. Andrews this week for the 150th Open Championship.

Considered the home of golf, the Old Course at St. Andrews embodies spirit, tradition and legend that spans more than six centuries.

Hosting its 28th Open Championship this year, St. Andrews can only be appreciated by those who value its unique characteristics and mystique. Only once you understand the golf course can you truly give credit to its brilliance.

Most players possess a love-hate relationship with this true links-style golf course, which can inspire instantaneous affection or evoke ceaseless disdain.

There is something truly enchanting about playing golf’s oldest championship on the linksland where the game got its beginnings. Forty-nine of the top fifty players in the world man the 156-person field this week, representing over twenty countries and spanning five decades, to take on the greatest test in golf.

Cool Clubs provides service and expertise unmatched by any other club fitting outfit in the world. Our service speaks for itself and even the greatest golfers in the world trust Cool Clubs for their custom club fitting and building needs.

From 2010 Masters champion Phil Mickelson to the Players victor Tim Clark, Cool Clubs is frequented by the world’s top players. And those top players who are in the field this week include Robert Allenby, Mark Calcavecchia, Tim Clark, Jerry Kelly, Matt Kuchar, Tom Lehman, George McNeill, Phil Mickelson, Ryan Moore, Tim Petrovic, and Michael Sim.

Cool Clubs is fortunate to work with these fine players, help them “Play Better Golf!” and watch as they top the leaderboards week after week.

For our Cool Clubs 2010 Open Championship Top Finisher Challenge, we want you to pick which PGA Tour Cool Clubs customer you think will finish highest this week at St. Andrews.

If you choose correctly, Cool Clubs will give you one complimentary fitting of your choice (driver, long game, irons or putter) at any of our locations.

Email, Facebook or Tweet us your pick to win the 2010 Open Championship.

Submissions will be accepted up until the first tee time on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 1:30 a.m. EST. so ACT FAST and Good Luck! This offer must be redeemed by September 30, 2010.

Phil Mickelson

Mickelson rarely shows up for the Open Championship and isn’t the best bet to finish well at St. Andrews. In his 16 career starts at the British Open, he has contended just once when he finished third in 2004. His next closest showing, he tied for 11th in 2000, a distant 12 shots behind winner Tiger Woods. Mickelson has three missed cuts at the British and a stroke average of 72.48.

Tim Clark

Clark won The Players championship earlier this year at TPC Sawgrass, considered by many to be the fifth Major. That marked his first victory in the U.S. but has three wins in Europe—the 2002 South African Open, the 2005 Scottish Open and the 2008 Australian Open. His best Open Championship finish was a tie for 23rd at St Andrews in 2005.

Matt Kuchar

Kuchar first played in The Open in 1998 as an amateur after winning the US Amateur Championship the year before, taking over the title won by Tiger Woods in the three previous years. He has had five top-10 finishes so far this season on the PGA Tour and is looking for to capture his first major victory this week.

Michael Sim

Born in Scotland but raised in Australia, this 25-year-old standout may have an inherent advantage over others in the field. Sim had an impressive 2009 on the Nationwide Tour where he captured three wins and had nine top-10 places. He won the Australian Order of Merit in December 2009 which earned him a berth into The Open at St Andrews and the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach last month. He finished tied for second place in an early-season event but is still situating himself among the greatest players in the world. Look for him to step into his own this week at the Open Championship.

A Very Cool Date Idea

Flickr User: Sweet Caroline Photo

Getting a man or woman to agree to go out on a date with you is difficult enough in its own right. Then deciding where to go and what to do—the decision can become maddening!

So why not think GOLF when deciding what to do on a date?

Sure, we’ve all heard or thought of the idea to go miniature golfing—a fun, laid-back and active way to spend some time getting to know another person in a non-threatening environment. Miniature golf provides you with entertaining scenery, playful competition, and a sport that anyone can perform well.

Mostly, we appreciate the putt-putt option because it’s a fun, light-hearted alternative to dinner and a movie. But let me ask you this…have you ever thought of getting a Cool Clubs custom fit as a date?

Okay, okay… this date idea isn’t for everyone, but Cool Clubs welcomes golfers of all skill level to come in and get fit. We understand that the first step toward playing good golf (and for those of you who already play, playing BETTER golf) is having the right tools in your bag to get the job done.

That being said, it makes perfect date sense for golfers–golfers of all skill level!

And okay sure, it’s a bit pricey for a first date (a driver fitting, for example, costs $100), but if you really like the person and want to impress him/her, I’d put money on the fact that no one will have ever suggested a Cool Clubs fitting as a date before.

So go out on a whim and be the first!

Our Scottsdale headquarters location is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday except we close early Wednesdays at 1 p.m. It would be the perfect Saturday day date.

Give it some thought and then give us a call at 888.284.9292 or 480.284.7766 to book an appointment for you and your other. We have locations in Scottsdale, Irvine and Dallas/Fort Worth that would be the perfect fit for a Cool date idea this summer!

We Know Father’s Day Has Passed…

But you can still bring your dad (or uncle or grandfather) in for a Cool Clubs fitting of choice for 25% off!

That’s right, between now and October 31, 2010, come in to any of our Cool Clubs locations for 25% off a custom fit. Choose from Driver, Long Game, Irons, Wedges or Putter!

We hope to see you and your dad at one of our locations this summer and we hope you’re playing Tour-quality golf!

Please remember to mention this promotion when you book your fitting! Call 888.284.9292 to book a custom club fitting at any of our locations–Scottsdale, Irvine or Dallas-Fort Worth.

Cool Clubs U.S. Open Challenge

The U.S. Open may well be one of the most celebrated golf tournaments on American soil, unmatched in tradition and history by any other tournament. Arguably the greatest meeting of land and sea, Pebble Beach Golf Links’ list of past U.S. Open Champions boasts the greatest players of their respective decades—Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Tiger Woods.

The 2010 U.S. Open will be the fifth on the famed Pebble Beach—a course that will have played host to more U.S. Opens than any other venue over the past 38 years.

The history, mystique and beauty that is Pebble Beach will give the greatest players in the world a tough run at the title this weekend.

And equally as tough may be the ability to accurately predict this year’s U.S. Open Champion. If you think you can guess right, we here at Cool Clubs want to give you the opportunity to win some great prizes.

If you accurately predict the 2010 U.S. Open Champion, Cool Clubs will give you one complimentary fitting of your choice.

If you can accurately predict the winner AND the winning score, Cool Clubs will give you a Full Club Fitting (Driver, Long Game, Irons, Wedges and Putter) plus a custom Cool Clubs putter.

That’s right Cool Clubs customers, you read that paragraph correctly! Fill out this form with your pick for the 2010 U.S. Open winner and his score and if you’re right, you will receive some pretty neat prizes. This offer is valid at any of our locations and must be redeemed by September 30, 2010.

And in case you need a little help deciding who stands a chance against the complicated beauty that is Pebble Beach, we’ve compiled our Top 5 Picks for the week. Here’s who we like, why we like them and what driver they’re using to tackle the famed Pebble Beach.

Tiger Woods

Driver: Victory Red, 9 degree with AD DI-8 by Graphite Design shaft

Despite Woods’ rough start to the 2010 season, there’s no way we’re counting Tiger out just yet. Woods’ record-setting 15-stroke victory at the 2000 U.S. Open held at Pebble Beach still resonates as arguably the greatest and most dominant performance in the history of golf.

Not only did Woods finish at 12 under at a tournament where no one else broke par, he did it with a triple bogey Saturday afternoon at the third hole, one of Pebble’s easiest par 4s. The next closest contender shot 15 strokes worse and finished at +3.

Tiger Woods of 2010 certainly is not the Tiger Woods of 2000, but we can’t discount the magic that happens when he steps foot onto Pebble Beach.

Ernie Els

Driver: Callaway FT Tour with prototype UST x-flex shaft

Els was one contender who finished tied for second at the 2000 U.S. Open, 15 strokes in the shadow of Tiger Woods.

Els, who at one time was included in every discussion involving the world’s most elite players, had fallen out of fans’ minds after a two-year winless drought on the PGA Tour spanning 2008 and 2009.

Starting to see the Big Easy get his groove back, he enters Pebble having won twice already this year—once at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship at Doral in March and two weeks later at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

Els has 60 professional wins to his credit (16 on the PGA Tour and 24 on the European Tour) including three major championships: the U.S. Open in 1994 at Oakmont, in1997 at Congressional and The Open Championship in 2002 at Muirfield.

Most recently coming off a T3 finish at the Valero Texas Open, Els is no stranger to contending in U.S. Opens.

Phil Mickelson

Driver: FT9 Tour, 7.5 degree with Mitsubishi Fubuki shaft

Lefty will have a huge support system rooting for him not only because has he never won a U.S. Open title, but also because a good finish here could catapult him into the No. 1 ranked player spot in the world above Tiger Woods. Let’s also not forget that Mickelson is looking for his second Major victory of the year, a feat Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have all done in the last 50 years.

Mickelson has had success at Pebble before, just not during an Open. He is a three-time winner of the AT&T National Pro-Am and has been runner-up five times in the past 11 years at U.S. Opens.

Pebble’s small greens—the smallest of any Open venue on Tour—will force many players to miss greens. A stellar short game will be key to scoring well here and that’s where Phil has an advantage. If his impeccable short game is on, expect him to duel to the end to finally get an Open victory.

And while the game of golf doesn’t necessarily need Phil to win, it certainly would follow in the trend of past champions who are the greatest of their era.

Lee Westwood

Driver: Ping G-15, 11 degree with an Aldila VooDoo NV6 X-Flex

Westwood is a man on a Major Championship mission. He’s finished in the top-10 in eight of his last 11 events on the PGA Tour including second at The Masters and a T4 at The Players. His win last week at the St. Jude Classic proves his game is right where it needs to be and he’s got some feel-good momentum propelling him forward into the week.

Westwood’s recent U.S. Open finishes include placing 23rd at the 2009 U.S. Open and a third place finish in 2008, his best-ever finish in the event. His last go-round at Pebble in the 2000 U.S. Open? A tie for fifth place.

Aside from U.S. Opens, the previous three Majors have treated the Englishman well. He has three-straight top-three finishes at major championships, finishing tied for third in the 2009 Open Championship and PGA Championship to go with his second-place finish at this year’s Masters.

If he is to prove himself at this year’s U.S. Open, he certainly needs to have his nerves in check; Westwood is paired with Woods and Els in the first two rounds.

Dustin Johnson

Driver: Taylormade R9 10.5 degree with a Fujikura Motore 65 gram x-flex

Johnson is a bit of a wildcard because although he doesn’t have any notoriety in Major Championship finishes, he’s got several key components working for him this week.

First, he won the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am the past two years in a row, a feat only five others have done, including greats Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Sam Snead.

Johnson made his PGA Tour debut in October 2007 where he missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open. He has since won each year, becoming the first player since Tiger Woods to go straight from college and win in each of his first three years on the PGA Tour.

Johnson finished his last four events under par with a top-10 at the Byron Nelson and his worst a 34th place finish.

Though the course will be unrecognizable with its U.S. Open set-up, don’t count out a good week for Johnson. His last three rounds at Pebble, he shot 65-64-74.

Now that you’ve got the scoop on our Top 5 picks, fill out this form, send us a message on Facebook, or Tweet us and let us know who you think will win the U.S. Open for your chance to win a free fitting of your choice, full fit and a custom Cool Clubs putter. Submissions will be accepted up until the first tee time on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 7 a.m. PST. Good Luck!
