Phil Mickelson

Mickelson rarely shows up for the Open Championship and isn’t the best bet to finish well at St. Andrews. In his 16 career starts at the British Open, he has contended just once when he finished third in 2004. His next closest showing, he tied for 11th in 2000, a distant 12 shots behind winner Tiger Woods. Mickelson has three missed cuts at the British and a stroke average of 72.48.

Tim Clark

Clark won The Players championship earlier this year at TPC Sawgrass, considered by many to be the fifth Major. That marked his first victory in the U.S. but has three wins in Europe—the 2002 South African Open, the 2005 Scottish Open and the 2008 Australian Open. His best Open Championship finish was a tie for 23rd at St Andrews in 2005.

Matt Kuchar

Kuchar first played in The Open in 1998 as an amateur after winning the US Amateur Championship the year before, taking over the title won by Tiger Woods in the three previous years. He has had five top-10 finishes so far this season on the PGA Tour and is looking for to capture his first major victory this week.

Michael Sim

Born in Scotland but raised in Australia, this 25-year-old standout may have an inherent advantage over others in the field. Sim had an impressive 2009 on the Nationwide Tour where he captured three wins and had nine top-10 places. He won the Australian Order of Merit in December 2009 which earned him a berth into The Open at St Andrews and the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach last month. He finished tied for second place in an early-season event but is still situating himself among the greatest players in the world. Look for him to step into his own this week at the Open Championship.
